2014 marks 10 years since the band’s debut album ‘The Fall Of Math’ was originally released and so with that in mind the opening set will see 65daysofstatic perform the whole album in full for the first time. On the importance of the album the band had the following to say:

In the first year of the weird post 9/11 future we all now occupy, 65daysofstatic wrote a record entirely by mistake in an obscure room in the North of England, usually in the evening after finishing whatever day jobs we were holding down.

In the weird spring of 2003 we watched in horror as the US invaded Iraq, aided by our own morally destitute government and seemingly for completely fabricated reasons. A month later, we went into the studio to record the music that would become ‘The Fall of Math’ aided by the kindness of Monotreme Records, the label that helped to build 65dos from the ground up into a viable commodity fit for digestion in the public sphere. We pulled a huge round the clock session, aided by the wisdom and skill of the infamous Alan Smyth, a man whose expertise and advice we seek to this day. While not exactly a global smash, The Fall of Math was met with some excitement by a number of people we had never dreamed of, and threw us into a world of very hard touring and recording for the foreseeable future. In short, it changed our lives, as did the aftermath of the events we were quasi-soundtracking by living through.

While 65daysofstatic are no longer the same people we were back then, The Fall of Math holds a great significance for us. Maybe it does for you too. We’re looking forward to a pleasant six months trying to remember how to play a bunch of the music on there. The world is as big a mess as it ever was. Come and see the results in March!’

The 2nd set will be a normal performance featuring tracks from new album ‘Wild Light’ plus the bands previous records as seen on their current UK run and last year’s U.S co-headline tour with Caspian.

‘Wild Light’ has been the band’s most widely received album with the likes of NME, Clash, Kerrang, Rock Sound, Independent, Q, Fake DIY, Line Of Best Fit and Drowned in Sound all heaping praise on the record.

Mikael Åkerfeldt awarded an exclusive scholarship

Every year, the organisation SKAP (Swedish composers and lyricists) deliver scholarships to Swedish musicians who they feel have contributed to Swedish music and culture. This year Mikael Åkerfeldt was awarded an exclusive scholarship for his services to the Swedish and international music scene.

Mikael was presented with the scholarship and diploma at an intimate event in the south side of Stockholm on the 9th of December;

“I’m quite honored to receive this. Apparently you can’t apply for this scholarship, a board of legendary musicians decide that you’re the right person for this award. I had never even heard of SKAP before they contacted me. I’m happy and surprised there’s some focus on heavy Swedish music and genuinely chuffed that they focused in on me. Through time I’ve been handed some awards and whatnot, but this one resonates more in me personally. No glitz and glamour, just some appreciation for what we and I do musically. It’s well appreciated!”

KATATONIA – UNPLUGGED & REWORKED

Print

In September 2013 Katatonia returned with Dethroned and Uncrowned released through Pledge Music and in partnership with Kscope, Peaceville’s sister label.

Dethroned and Uncrowned, a reworking of 2012’s Dead End Kings, allowed the band to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the songs.

In May 2014 Katatonia will take their ‘Unplugged & Reworked’ set-up on the road for the first time, presenting an intimate evening with the band each night performing tracks from Dethroned and Uncrowned alongside atmospheric classics from their entire career, stripped and reworked.

Guitarist and founding member Anders Nyström comments:

“Many people who appreciated how we “dethroned” and “uncrowned” last year’s ‘Dead End Kings’ album have been hoping and even insisting the same would also be done to one or more of our older albums. Admittedly, not likely to happen many a moon ago, at least not with a studio album, we are excited to let you know that by bringing this show on the road the same possibility now opens up that door, with a live version. So expect to hear stripped and reworked songs from our entire career and have them come into equation by thriving on our atmospheric vision, the ambience of some highly unusual venues and last but not least with your presence and choir to set the mood for a soothing experience. We’re already certain this will be the most different and remarkable thing we’ve ever done!”
